A little bit about me…
My name is Francis Chin, I grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but I spend my younger school days in Singapore. Later, I moved on to complete my studies in Les Roches, Switzerland and graduated as a Hotel Management person.
Suppose to be a hotelier, but something went wrong
When I returned from Switzerland, I was full of enthusiam and energy. My first job was a receptionist at a local 5 Star Hotel. However, after 6 months, I resigned without a job.
I got bored.
The reason I got bored.
I got bored because I was doing the same thing everyday. I got bored, because I realized that I did not learn anything interesting or exciting being a Receptionist. I requested for a transfer to another department, but I was rejected.
So I made a choice to leave the hotel, even without a job.
Without a job, I became desperate after 6 months
My parents starts to made noise. My goldfish starts to ignore me. I looked at the mirror and can not recognized myself.
I starts to have doubt about myself and I starts to wonder what am I going to do? Then one fine day, I checked out the classified section as I usually do, I saw an interesting Ads.
The Ads is looking for Travel Consultant
So I went for interviewed. The first thing the interviewer asked me is this question,
“Why did you applied for the job? We are looking for ONLY ladies..” The man behind the desk questioned impatiently…
“huh? Your ads never said you only looking for ladies !”
“Anyway…have a seat”
That was my first encountered with this company. As you can probably see that it was not very impressive !
The interview went on for the next 30 minutes and I told myself, let’s don”t waste time, I am out of here. As I walked out the office, I told myself, never going to work in this company.
The interviewer was rude and unprofessional and not the job that I am looking for as well.
Feeling depressed and sad to have met someone like that.
2 weeks later, I received a call.
The lady from the other line was nice and invited me for an interview.
Interviewed? To my surprise it was the same company which I met 2 weeks ago ! Before I can say no, the lady said this,
“Our Chairman would like to meet up with you personally if you are available…”
Chairman? That’s interesting…So, out of curiosity, I accepted.
My life changed since then onwards
I worked from that company since 1993 till 2009, all together about 17 years. In between 2005 and 2007 I resigned once, to venture out to start my direct selling business.
After so many years in the Travel Industry, I had played various different roles. My last held position was in senior management helping them to business develop their online travel division, which I was very passionate about. (www.pyotravel.com)
It was this exposure and opportunities that allows me to discover my latest interest – Data Visualization & Communication.
What about Data Visualization & Communication so fascinating about?
For me, it is more than fascination. I am passionate about using Visualization tools to help organizations to improve their bottom line. So, I guess I add value by helping people to do that too.
The tool that I used is simple, Microsoft Excel. In fact, one of my works had been featured by chandoo.org (Great resource to learn about Excel tips and tutorial), check out the youtube below:
So, now, I train people on Building Dashboard using Excel professionally and if I have time, I will accept one to one consultancy works occasionally.
