What is a Dashboard?
A Dashboard is simply your cockpit that puts you in control of your situation. If you have business dashboard, it helps you to gain insight on how your business is doing, what it is likely to happen. If you are a project manager, your dashboard can help you track your progress.
Dashboard puts you in command so that you can make decision fast for next course of action.
So, who needs a Dashboard?
The answer is Anyone. Business owners need it, Managers need it, Sales people need it. Even a student needs it. Why ?
Because all of us has the need to be in control of where we are heading. Ask yourself below questions :
1. Do I want to have an overview of how my business is doing in relative to my target?
2. Am I progressing as per schedule towards my goals?
3. What are the areas I need to take action to rectify?
4. Are our resources used effectively?
If your answers to all above questions are ‘YES’. Then you need a Dashboard.
But I don’t have budget to purchase an expensive dashboard system
Me too ! You don’t have to. Unless you are running your business totally without using any computer, then chances you are already using Microsoft Excel already.
If you are using Excel, congratulations ! You can build your Dashboard using Excel !
That means, your cost is almost zero to create your own Dashboard.
I remembered when I was a Manager and what a struggle it was when comes to weekly management meeting.
My bosses wants to know what’s happening and how is the business doing at this point in time. Every week, I spend hours compiling reports, digest them and try to analyze them.
And every time I struggled, because, there is just too much information to present. In order to give a “complete” picture, it is always a challenge to balance what is too much detail and what is too high level.
Until we defined what is important for us to keep track and how to present these important metrics using a Dashboard built in Excel, my life as a Manager was a nightmare.
